vintage costume jewellery

My mother told me not to wear anything made of pearl for my wedding because it is bad luck. Supposedly they symbolize tears. So I took care to buy jewelry made of mother-of-pearl for my bridesmaids and myself. I thought all along that mother-of-pearl wasn’t real or true pearl, or did I assume wrong?

Mother of pear is actually the inside lining of certain shells so is not technically "real" pearl. Still lovely though so you are good there. While pearls symbolize tears, think of all the happy tears you’ve had!! I know I cried when I got engaged because I was so happy, cry at happy movies all the time, and will probably cry at my wedding!!

You would probably be better off taking it to an appraiser. A site cannot list every peice of vintage jewelry, and even if it was one where you send a picture of what you have, they really need to see it up close to tell the condition. Especially if it has stones in it. Do some price checking around your neighborhood to see what some charge for an appraisal. Or just take it into a store that does appraisals and ask if they know anything about your piece.

Depends entirely on the quality of the jewlery and how it’s made/made out of. My suggestion would be to price around similar items. Try using etsy as a resource. That should give you a pretty good idea what other’s are selling similar jewlery for.

I have alot of jewelry over 1000 pieces from estate sales, yard sales, and so on. Much is vintage costume jewelry but there is a little of everything. I want to make up mystery "grab bags" priced from .25 to $5.00 with jewelry. What do you think? Good idea?
no refunds. That’s the point of being a mystery bag. Each bag will have well worth what they paid. If they pay .25 then te bag value is like 3-5$ that is why the price is only 25 tey are not loosing much

This is a very interesting concept. However, if its money for your jewelry that you crave, I think you’re likely to make more using a site like http://www.refinity.com. You can sell your old scrap jewelry or gold to them, and get a good kickback. Had a friend who used them. But I admit, it’s not as adventurous as filling mystery jewelry bags to the brim.

My husband bought me a beautiful diamond necklace for Mother’s Day. It’s so nice and so very thoughtful, but we really can’t afford it and I just don’t wear jewelry. I don’t want to upset him, but I want to return it so we can use the money (almost $400) to pay some bills instead. Would it be completely wrong to do that? If not, should I let him know before or after and how? Thanks for any thoughts!

First you need to share with him the importance of the gift and how much you appreciate it.

Then you need to come clean and say - "While I love the meaning behind this gift our love is more valuable and for the well being and financial security of our family, I think it is best to return the necklace; Do you agree?"

The key is for him to know - you love him above all and to you are doing this for the family and last have him be part of the decision.

If he is not aware of the current family finances, then maybe you need to share how the family is doing.

If this item was purchased on a credit card then it could end up costing you more than $400.

I have a vintage Rolex ladies dress watch. It is nothing like the modern Rolexes I have encountered. It has a tiny rectangular face and a smooth, flexible solid gold band. In addition I have a Rolex woven goldbracelet which has flowers on it, made of pearls and rose-cut diamonds. Both pieces have been authenticated but I find out much more than that.
